InterLibrary Loan (ILL)
What is ILL and How Does It Work?
Definition:
An interlibrary loan is a transaction in which library materials, or a copy
of the material, is made available by one library to another upon request.
Purpose:
The purpose is to obtain material that is NOT available within the Montclair
Public Library system and to lend material found in MPL that is not
available
in other libraries.
Who May Use the Service:
The service is available to card members who are residents of Monclair, nonresidents
who own property in Montclair and paid members.
If you do not meet these conditions
please contact your home library.
Borrowing:
Materials that may be borrowed.
We may request a loan or copy of any material from another library
although the lending library will decide in each case whether or not
they can provide a particular item. Such items include books, articles,
some materials produced on microform and sometimes records, cassettes,
and/or videotapes. We can obtain photocopies of missing pages from
MPL library materials.
Most libraries will not ordinarily lend the following types of materials:
New items published within the last 12 months; rare or valuable materials,
including manuscripts; Bulky or fragile items difficult or expensive
to
ship; Materials in high demand at the lending library; local history
materials; computer software; periodical volumes, un microfilmed newspapers;
and reference book.
How Interlibrary Loan Works:
MPL patrons must submit ILL requests in writing on forms supplied by
the Library, on the telephone or by e-mail (when available). For best
service,
patrons should supply complete bibliographic citations.
Patrons may also initiate ILL requests over the Internet. "Click here to access the catalog and place a request."
Patrons wanting to pick up books from another library will be given
a completed ALA ILL form to present to the lending library. The library
will send
an MPL Ill Agreement form to the lending library. Patrons are
expected to sign the form before they take receipt of the book. The lending
library
will then send the form to Montclair. This way the Montclair Public
Library has a record of the transaction. ALL BOOKS PICKED UP PERSONALLY
SHOULD BE RETURNED TO THE MONTCLAIR PUBLIC LIBRARY. MPL will not give
ALA ILL forms to patrons for Libraries in the ReBL Cooperative Agreement
or Libraries with reciprocal borrowing agreements with the Montclair
Public Library.
Accurate personal information must be provided when making an ILL request.
The information must include name, address, telephone number
and most
important, library card number.
Patrons may request and receive up to six books at one time. MPL will
not accept and process any request beyond six until the number of ILL
items with a patron is less than six. Patrons are entitle to six
articles per request.
Time:
Please plan ahead when requesting materials. The time taken for an ILL loan
to arrive depends on the difficulty of request, the availability of
the material,
and the size of the backlog in Interlibrary Loan. We need a minimum of two
weeks to search, process, and receive each request.
Cost:
A 15 cents charge, payable to the Montclair Public Library, will be
charged to the library patron for each filled ILL request. Patrons will
be
required to pay this fee when picking up ILL items.
For the most part, there is no charge for borrowing materials. However,
some lending libraries may impose charges for interlibrary loan.
The requester
will be responsible for approving any such charges or we will cancel the
request.
Notification:
When the material arrives, we will make a telephone call to notify
the patron for pickup. If we cannot reach the requester or leave a message,
we will send a postcard to the address listed on the form. WE WILL
HOLD ILL MATERIAL FOR ONLY THREE DAYS AFTER NOTIFICATION.
Loan Period:
The lending library determines the loan period, Lending libraries
determine any conditions regarding the use of their materials. Limitations
such as "No Renewal" and "In Library Use Only" will be
honored by MPL. There are no loan periods for articles.
Renewals:
ILL items may be renewed ONCE for an additional two-week period assuming
there are no restrictions on renewal imposed by the lending library.
Returning Materials:
All materials borrowed through ILL must be returned to the Montclair
pUblic Library. Please leave the white slip attached to the book cover.
We
will charge late fees for overdue books.
Fines:
Fines for overdue ILL items follow the same schedule as items owned
by the Montclair Public Library:
Books, Audiobooks, CDs: $0.15/day
Videocassettes and DVD's: $2.00/day
